  1. Quinine is an antimalarial drug extracted 
  2. from the bark of the cinchona tree. Peruvian 
  3. Indians taught French missionaries how to use 
  4. the bark in 1630, but quinine was not 
  5. isolated until 1820. It is a bitter alkaloid 
  6. (C20H24N2O2).
